Written in the sixteenth century and almost immediately a subject of controversy, The Prince presents Machiavellis advice to a ruler who would seek to maintain his power most effectively. Pragmatism and expediency are seen to be more important considerations than ethical ones, and a ruler must be prepared to take actions in the interest of public order that might conflict with purely private ethical concerns. A good ruler must avoid being hated by his subjects however. In The Art of War Machiavelli examines ancient military practices for their relevence to modern political issues, and asserts that military power is at the base of all civil order.
Written in 1513 for the Medici, following their return to power in Florence, The Prince is a handbook on ruling and the exercise of power. It remains as relevant today as it was in the sixteenth century. Widely quoted in the Press and in academic publications, The Prince has direct relevance to the issues of business and corporate governance confronting global corporations as they enter a new millennium. Much of what Machiavelli wrote has become the common currency of realpolitik, yet still his ideas retain the power to shock and annoy. In the words of Norman Stone, The Prince is a manual of man-management that would suit a great many parts of the modern world.
Herbert George Wells (1866 - 1946) was an English writer. He was prolific in many genres, writing dozens of novels, short stories, and works of social commentary, but he is now best remembered for his science fiction novels. The New Machiavelli is a 1911 novel, the story of Richard Remington who appears to be a man to envy. But underneath his superficial contentment, he is far from happy with either his marriage or the politics of his party. The novel describes the disarray into which his life is thrown, when he meets the young and beautiful Isabel Rivers and becomes tormented by desire.
A prince, therefore, is not to regard the scandal of being cruel, if thereby he keeps his subjects in their allegiance and united... Considered one of the first works of modern philosophy, Machiavellis The Prince is an intense study on the nature of power and the course it should take when ruling a country. The story is a manual of amoral and underhand instruction on how a prince might go about ascending to a position of prominence, using any means at his disposal - including flattery, bias and force. Responsible for the widely-used phrase Machiavellian, with all of its negative connotations, his extreme treatise remains a classic text.
